PANAMA VIEJO: RELIVE THE HISTORY WITH ITS 489 YEARS OF FOUNDING

During the week of August 11th thru 16th a load of activities are carried out in commemoration of the 489 years of found of the Panama City. A great number of foreigners and nationals visit the Group of Historic Monuments of Panama Viejo.

The Group of Historic Monuments of Panama Viejo is comprised of Pre-Hispanic historical remains and the ruins of the former City of Panama (1519-1671), the first city founded along the Pacific coastline of the American Continent, currently considered World Heritage. The Cathedral Tower being one of the most visited sites and bastion of the national history.

Cathedral Tower

Built from 1619 to 1626 by initiative of Bishop Francisco de Camara, “It is completely made of stonework and masonry, brick laid, with three wide aisles of great longitude, with ten (40 meter) fires, with very strong stand made of a strong stick produced by the earth called maría, with brick bases made of stone and woodwork well elaborated of ceder…” appropriate description by Juan Requejo and Salcedo (1640).

The Cathedral Tower has a viewpoint that offers a spectacular view of the city capital like the buildings along Balboa Avenue, San Francisco, Costa del Este, beautiful scenery as well as appreciating the modern highway that leads to the Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen.

Calendar of Activities

Foreigners and nationals can enjoy colorful and interesting activities:

From Tuesday August 12th thru Thursday 14th: There will be a presentation of characters that represent the inhabitants of Panama La Vieja at the Museo de Sitio museum.

Wednesday the 13th: in the Museo de Sitio museum, “Dia de Historia” (History Day) from 9:00 a.m.

Thursday the 14th: at Plaza Mayor (Major or Grand Plaza), Gymkana didactic activity done with the Juan B. Sosa and Sara Sotillo schools, where they teach the history of the city through treasure hunts.

Friday the 15th: presentation from the theater group “La Peregrina”, from 4:00 p.m., leaving from the Convent, following along the Group to end in the Plaza Mayor, parade organized by the Town Council of Parque Lefevre, with the participation of the children who are members of the Soccer League of the “Patronato Panama Viejo” – Kiwanis Club.

This August 15th we welcome the thousands of tourists and nationals that would like to visit the Museo de Sitio museum as well as the Cathedral Tower (Torre de la Catedral)
